In the ongoing Panchayat elections in West Bengal, the main opposition party BJP has accused the ruling party Trinamool Congress of orchestrating violence and creating unrest during the nomination process. BJP State President Sukant Majumdar made these claims during a meeting with West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose on Saturday.
According to Majumdar, the meeting with the Governor lasted for a considerable time, during which he expressed his concerns about the ruling party's alleged involvement in spreading terror and obstructing the opposition's participation in the elections. He highlighted incidents where workers from various opposition parties were reportedly attacked and even killed. Majumdar further alleged that opposition candidates were forcefully prevented from filing nominations in several panchayat nomination centers.
Moreover, the BJP leader claimed that pressure was being exerted on opposition candidates to withdraw their nominations. He stated that the ruling party was not only resorting to violence but also employing intimidation tactics to deter opposition parties, including the BJP, from participating in various regions of West Bengal.
Following the meeting, Sukant Majumdar addressed the media outside Raj Bhavan, emphasizing that the Governor concurred with the opposition's concerns to a large extent. Majumdar asserted that the Governor possessed evidence regarding the involvement of miscreants in the elections and their direct connection with Trinamool Congress leaders. While the BJP leader refrained from disclosing the names at the moment, he hinted that the Governor might reveal them publicly at an appropriate time.
The opposition has also raised serious allegations of violence, including instances of bombing and firing, targeting rival political groups. They assert that such acts are driving opposition parties out of certain areas, effectively curbing their electoral participation.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these claims will be addressed and if any actions will be taken to maintain peace and uphold democratic principles throughout the Panchayat elections in West Bengal.
